Warning: Featured Image Not Related – What Makes It “Worth” It? | Indie Love

The X-Box One and the PS4 are coming. And with them come the standard, “Which system do I want?” along with all sorts of explanations why. This is fine and dandy, but more than, “Which one?” I keep asking myself, “What makes it worth it?” Why are you buying either the X-Box One or the PS4 at all? There’s so much stuff to play on the computer, what does it take to convince you to get a console on top of it?

Update! The Future of the Original Tangerine Triangle!

Hey there!

It's been a while.  I've... basically abandoned this blog over the last couple months.  My writing situation has changed pretty significantly and trying to figure out whether or not to keep this blog going was kind of :|

I have however decided to keep updating this blog.  The point of this blog was to keep track of my writing adventures with games.  Even though I'm not writing any games right now and have a different writing blog that I think matches what I wanted creative writing-wise better, this blog is still useful.

Every now and again I might post an original article here, but for the main part, this will be a convenient location to link to articles I've written here and there for different sites.  It lets me keep track of what I wrote for The Indie Game Mag and Indie Love even though I don't write for one of them anymore and I just started with the other.

If you want to see what I'm doing with creative writing, please check out my new site, Pieces of Writing.  I haven't updated it recently, but I do have a fair bit of pieces that I want to share on the site.  I encourage you to look at it and give me your feedback!

I Really Want Royal Trap + Updates

Okay, so, it's a new month and I owe you guys an update.  BUT I also really want to play Royal Trap (I can never decide whether to bold or italicize games.  Thoughts?) so I figured I'd make it a double whammy and talk about both.

In Royal Trap you play as Madeleine Valois, a woman who serves in the courts as a guide to the prince in order to help him marry an appropriate bride.  Of course, this is not so straightforward and it looks like there are lots of wonderful things to complicate Madeleine's attempts to have her prince marry well.

So far, the art style and premise remind me of Crimson Empire, which I haven't actually played or read, but that makes me super excited anyway.  So far, I've really enjoyed Hanako Games when it comes to story, but this seems more like my normal cup of tea.  The art also makes me excited because the outfits are elegant, and the art quality is an improvement over Date Warp and Magical Diary from what I can tell so far.  You can watch the trailer to see for yourself!

I admit I haven't played the demo yet because I know once I start playing I won't want to stop, and by posting about it here first, I can get a discount when I buy the game, but don't let that dissuade you.  I really do enjoy Hanako Games and the art and music alone promise an interesting time.  The theme is "Elaborate Deception" produced by LeetStreetBoys and featuring vocals from Natasha Cox.  It's crazy catchy as per usual with LeetStreetBoys, even if the lyrics are a little cheesy.  You can hear it in its entirety here.

Okay, I think that's enough about Royal Trap or else you'll be confused about why my update is even here.

I did not wind up completing Bionic Heart 2 in an appropriate time frame, so it got finished up by KittyKatStar.  There's no hard feelings.  She's nice and much faster than me.  I didn't really start feeling better until around Valentine's Day anyway so I haven't been particularly effective at anything.  She also wrote parts of Heileen 3, and is the writer for two other games for Winter Wolves including Spirited Heart 2.  KittyKatStar is someone to keep an eye on :]

Bionic Heart 2 should be out by mid-March and I'll post about it once it's released.

For Culina, I once again haven't been particularly productive, but I managed to pass the 10,000 word milestone for the story which makes me happy and I got to write more Emily.  From what I can tell in the lemmasoft forums, people do not like Emily very much.  It's not really a spoiler, but the MC in Culina did not have a clean break-up with her, and to me, she is still very much a part of MC's life whether or not she's there.  It's not really fair for people to just dislike her based off of what I've written, so I'm trying to portray her in a more positive light.

I'm not saying Emily is an amazing character.  If she were a real person, I would not like her at all.  But I know her better than I've written her and she isn't just a flighty two dimensional character.  I'm working on fleshing everyone out when writing the main story for Culina and we'll see how effective I am.

Culina, Bionic Heart 2, & Being Sick

For better or for worse (it is for worse but it sounds better to say it the other way), I've been pretty sick the last few weeks.  Not so sick that I'm throwing up all the time, but sick enough that it's harder to do things and I have low energy/sleep a lot.

I thought I was finally getting better towards the end of last week, but apparently that wasn't the case.  I've been throwing up this week from coughing too hard and it's difficult because I need to be done editing/proofing/expression coding Bionic Heart 2 by the end of next week (I'm about halfway done) and Culina needs to get written.

I really really want to write Culina.  I think it's at a good point to actually get completed within the next few months and the writing is an integral part of making that happen.  Unfortunately, when I'm not feeling well I can't go out and if I can't go out then I don't feel inspired to write for Culina.  I get some stuff done, but it's significantly slower.

On the plus side, as long as I remember not to listen to an LP or watch TV when I do it, the Bionic Heart 2 work goes pretty well.  Once again, it's going slower because I'm sick, but I'm sure I'll make that deadline.

The Culina one?  Already missed it and struggling to catch up.  I am so so tired of being sick.

But enough ranting, what you want to hear is how far along I actually am in things.  Bionic Heart 2 is a countdown because that's how I count it :P

Culina Word Count:  6859
Bionic Heart 2 Lines Remaining:  5592 (This is actually shorter since there are blank lines/comments/etc)

For my few readers, I'd like to pose a question.  Considering what Culina is, how long do you think the story needs to be to cost $20?  How about $25?  I'm trying to gauge how much content I might need to add.

If you don't feel like you know enough about Culina to answer, let me know and I'll answer what I can.

Culina (Part One) Is Out!

Man oh man oh man! I'm so happy.  It's been a long time coming, but Culina:  The Spirit of Cooking has finally been released.  You can look at all of its prettiness at it's official page.

Lol, I've been with IGM for too long, I'm resisting the urge now to write about it in press release format.  I guess I could, but I want to write in my own informal voice when I can.

But yes!  It's out and it's a great weight off my back.  I haven't been writing much for the second Culina game in the last few months because I've been feeling like it hasn't been going much places, but now that the overdue first game is out, I feel raring to go!  I've got to play it first (I haven't actually seen its entirety yet) but after that I'm sure I'll be writing up a storm!

There are already a fair number of comments in the Lemmasoft Release Thread and I'm excited about that.  I'll be looking at it to see suggestions on how the characters are written and that sort of thing.  I've been wanting feedback on my writing for ages from outside parties.  When you've been around the characters as long as I have it's hard to see them as just what's on the screen.

Anyway!  Everyone should go check it out!  It might be a bit cliche at times, but I did work hard on it and I hope you enjoy it :D
